Family Information

Welcome to the Family Orientation experience!

We are so excited that your student has decided to join the Panther Family!

While family members and supporters are not required to attend orientation, it is highly encouraged. This is a big transition for both you and your student, and we are here to help you both through that transition.

As family members and supporters of a first-year student we want you to have the tools to support your student in their transition to UNI. We understand that this is a transition for you just as much as it is for your student.

You are invited to join your student for their orientation session. Student will indicate how many guests they plan to bring when they register for orientation. Family members do not need to complete a separate registration for their orientation session.

Personalize Your Orientation Experience

During your orientation day you will customize your experience by selecting sessions that meet you and your student's specific needs. You will be able to select five sessions about the topics listed below to attend:

  • ‌Student Involvement
  • Career Services
  • Academic Success
  • Housing & Dining on Campus
  • Study Abroad
  • Financial Aid & Billing
  • Health & Well-Being Services
  • Recreation Services
  • Off Campus Students
  • Music Opportunities for Non Music Majors

Getting a feel for your student's new home is an important part of the orientation day. During the afternoon you will be able to go on guided tours of campus and tour a sample room in your student's dorm building.

In addition to these smaller group sessions, you will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with the following areas:

  • Financial Aid: sign up for a time during check-in
  • Student Accessibility Services: drop by their office during afternoon sessions
  • Student Health Center: drop by during afternoon sessions

While you will be with your student for the majority of the day, there will be about 2 hours of the day you will be separated. This will allow your student to build connections with other new Panthers, their Orientation Leader, and academic advisor, while you have the opportunity to learn how to best support your student and ask questions of campus student support services.

Orientation Day Info

We recommend you wear comfortable clothing and bring a reusable water bottle, since we will be moving around campus and summer days tend to be warm. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

Parking is located off 23rd Street at the Multimodal Transportation Center. Orientation staff will assist you in finding parking and getting to the check-in location, in Maucker Union. At check-in, you will receive your orientation materials, including a schedule for the day. Check-in is from 8:00 - 8:30AM.

As supporters of a transfer student we want you to have the tools to support your student in their transition to UNI. While your student has been to college before, this is still a new place for them and can be a transition for both you and your student.

We have two on-campus transfer programs for both your students and yourselves. You can find more information about those Transfer Transition Days, here

Transfer students have the opportunity to register for an optional on campus Transfer Transition Day to enhance their orientation experience. You are more than welcome to accompany them on one of these days, your student will indicate how many guests they plan to bring when they register for one of these days.

Transfer Transition Days are held from 10:00AM-2:00PM on:

  • June 5
  • July 10
