Summer Orientation Staff 2024

Summer orientation staff members support the mission of the Student Success & Retention department by helping remove student barriers to persistence and facilitating experiences that promote the discovery of community, meaning and purpose.

Orientation Leader


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • ​​Participate in extensive training covering academic, campus & community resources, diversity & inclusion, communication and leadership skills, as well as topics related to new student needs and concerns
  • Assist in facilitating both in-person and virtual summer orientation programs for new first-year and transfer students
  • Serve as a positive representative of UNI by fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for students and their families & guests
  • Convey information to students and guests about university policies and procedures, community values and expectations, campus life, course offerings, registration and related topics
  • Participate in miscellaneous preparation, tear-down and clean-up duties
  • Engage in all aspects of orientation programs including, but not limited to: check-in, parking, presentations, tech support during Zoom sessions, campus tours, evening social activities, registration and evaluation
  • Act as a positive representative of UNI

Time Commitment & Compensation

Spring 2024

  • Enroll in UNIV 1086: Studies in Peer Educator: (Date and Time: TBA) if not previously taken
  • Enroll in UNIV 1086: Studies in Peer Educator - New Student Orientation (NSO) Focus: (Date and Time: TBA)
    • Students receive class credit for successfully completing the course(s). These courses can be used to graduate with Peer Education Distinction.

Summer 2024

  • ​Full-time employment from Tuesday, May 28 through Friday, July 12, 2024
  • $14.00 per hour
  • Lunch during programming
  • Staff may accept other employment on weekends during the period of full-time employment, pending discussion with the Orientation Leadership Team; outside employment must not conflict with orientation responsibilities 
  • Staff may not enroll in summer classes during the period of full-time employment, unless approved by the Orientation Leadership Team; classes must not conflict with orientation responsibilities
  • Making a positive impact on hundreds of new Panthers and their families: priceless 

 


Qualifications & Requirements

  • ​Currently enrolled UNI undergraduate student and must be enrolled for Fall 2024
  • Positive attitude regarding the university and its mission
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with differing perspectives
  • Openness to learning more about yourself, others and UNI
  • Strong interpersonal communication and group facilitation skills
  • Must be in good academic and conduct standing
