Jump Start FAQs

What is Jump Start?

Jump Start is an extended orientation program designed to facilitate the successful transition of students from underrepresented racial or ethnic minority groups as well as TRIO or AVID participants.  Eligible students are sent invitations to join the program, but other students are welcome to contact or 319-273-4798 if they are interested in participating as well.

When is Jump Start?

Jump Start will take place from Saturday, August 13th - Wednesday, August 17, 2022.  Students who sign up for the program commit to the full 5 days of programming.

Students living on campus will move into their on campus housing Saturday, August 13th after check-in.

If I have already attended summer orientation, why should I also attend Jump Start?

The Jump Start program provides an opportunity for new students to build relationships with faculty and staff of color, connect with current underrepresented students who will mentor participants throughout their transition, and explore university resources in-depth before classes begin.  Jump Start students also participate in fun and interactive sessions on topics such as campus diversity, student involvement, wellness, leadership, and much, much more!

Is the room that I move in to for Jump Start the same room I will be living in during the academic year?

Yes. Room selection begins in April for all new student. At that time, students will select their room in the order that they completed their housing contract. 

Jump Start students will move into their room for the academic year on Saturday, August 13th at no additional charge, with the requirement that participants attend all Jump Start program sessions.  

Will meals be provided during Jump Start week?

Yes. All students will receive a meal plan for the duration of Jump Start.

Do I have to attend all activities throughout Jump Start week?

Yes. Each participant must commit to attending all sessions during Jump Start.

What kind of activities will I participate in during Jump Start week?

Students will participate in a variety of fun and educational sessions, with topics such as diversity, student involvement, financial literacy, academic planning, wellness, and leadership. You will participate in these activities with a small group of other new students, guided by a current UNI student known as a Pathfinder.

When will I receive more information about orientation and Jump Start?

Students who are eligible for the program will begin receiving information starting in February.  After eligible students register for a summer orientation session, they will receive an email with a direct link to also register for Jump Start.

Will I be able to participate in the UNI Now program if I am a part of Jump Start?

Yes. Jump Start will conclude on Wednesday afternoon, August 17th, 2022 and UNI Now programming will begin afterward. For more information about UNI Now, visit
